Poly-Viscose Fabric for School Slacks: Manufacturing Process and Benefits
Manufacturing10 min read|Published: 24 March 2026|Last Updated: March 2026
## What Is Poly-Viscose Fabric?
Poly-viscose is a fabric blend combining **polyester fibres** and **viscose (rayon) fibres**. While VHF's primary school slack fabric is cotton-polyester, poly-viscose is a common alternative in the school uniform industry. Understanding both blends helps buyers make informed sourcing decisions.
**Standard poly-viscose ratio for school uniforms:**
- 65% Polyester + 35% Viscose
- 55% Polyester + 45% Viscose (more popular for drape and comfort)
## Fibre Properties Comparison
| Property | Cotton | Polyester | Viscose | Cotton-Poly | Poly-Viscose |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Breathability** | Excellent | Poor | Good | Good | Good |
| **Moisture absorption** | High | Very low | High | Moderate | Moderate-high |
| **Durability** | Moderate | Excellent | Low | High | Moderate |
| **Wrinkle resistance** | Low | High | Low | Moderate | High |
| **Colour retention** | Good | Excellent | Moderate | Very good | Good |
| **Cost** | Moderate | Low | Moderate | Moderate | Low-moderate |
| **Shrinkage** | High | Nil | Moderate | Low | Low-moderate |
**Key insight:** Poly-viscose offers a **crisp, formal drape** with good wrinkle resistance, making it popular for school uniforms that need to look neat. However, viscose reduces durability compared to cotton-polyester blends.
## Why VHF Chose Cotton-Polyester Over Poly-Viscose
After extensive testing, VHF uses **cotton-polyester blend** (65/35 for SONY Selex, 60/40 for RICHMAN Selex) rather than poly-viscose for our school slacks. The key reasons:
1. **Durability:** Cotton-poly lasts 18-24 months vs 12-18 months for poly-viscose in school wear
2. **Wash performance:** Viscose weakens when wet; cotton-poly maintains strength through 50+ washes
3. **Colorfastness:** Cotton-poly has superior dye retention, especially for deep colours like Bottle Green and Maroon
4. **Comfort for children:** Higher cotton content means better breathability — critical in Indian summers
5. **Indian market preference:** Teachers and parents in India prefer the feel of cotton-poly over pure synthetics
## The Manufacturing Process: From Yarn to Finished Slack
### Step 1: Yarn Procurement
VHF sources blended yarn from certified mills in Tirupur (Tamil Nadu) and Ludhiana (Punjab). Yarn specifications are tested on arrival for:
- Count accuracy (Ne count for cotton, Denier for polyester)
- Tensile strength
- Twist per inch (TPI)
### Step 2: Fabric Weaving (Twill Weave)
School slack fabric is woven in a **twill weave pattern** (specifically 2/1 or 3/1 twill), creating the diagonal rib characteristic of school trousers. Twill weave provides:
- Higher thread density (more durable than plain weave)
- Better drape and shape retention
- Formal appearance suited to school uniform
**Loom specifications:** 44-inch or 58-inch width looms at VHF's fabric partner mills.
### Step 3: Dyeing and Finishing
Piece dyeing (dyeing the woven fabric) is used for most colours. Key finishing processes:
- **Pre-shrinking:** Sanforization process limits shrinkage to <2%
- **Anti-pilling treatment:** Surface treatment reduces fibre migration
- **Heat setting (polyester):** Fixes the polyester fibres to prevent bagging
- **Calendering:** Pressing for smooth surface finish
### Step 4: Fabric Inspection
Every fabric roll is inspected for:
- GSM (target: 240-260 for SONY Selex, 220-240 for RICHMAN Selex)
- Colour shade consistency (all rolls in a batch must match)
- Defects: holes, slubs, weave irregularities
- Width consistency
### Step 5: Cutting and Stitching
Fabric is cut in layers (20-30 layers at once) using pattern dies. Stitching uses:
- 6-thread overlock for SONY Selex (stronger seam)
- 5-thread overlock for RICHMAN Selex
- Bar tacking at stress points (belt loops, pocket corners)
### Step 6: Quality Control and Packing
Each finished piece is inspected for measurements, stitching, and colour before packing in size-sorted bundles.
## What to Ask Your Supplier About Fabric
When sourcing school slacks from any manufacturer, ask:
1. What is the fabric GSM?
2. What is the fabric composition (cotton/poly ratio)?
3. Where is the fabric sourced from?
4. Has the fabric been pre-shrunk?
5. What colorfastness grade does it achieve?
6. Can you show the fabric test report?
VHF is happy to provide answers to all of these for every product we manufacture.
