Hosiery Fabric Testing and Quality Assurance: What Buyers Should Know
Quality Guide12 min read|Published: 24 March 2026|Last Updated: March 2026
## Why Fabric Quality Testing Matters for Wholesale Buyers
When you place a bulk order for 500 or 5,000 pieces of school slacks, you are investing Rs 50,000 to Rs 5,00,000 or more. The single biggest risk in wholesale buying is receiving goods that do not match the quality of the samples you approved. Fabric testing and quality assurance (QA) processes are what separate reliable manufacturers from unreliable ones.
At Vinod Hosiery Factory (VHF), every batch of SONY Selex and RICHMAN Selex school slacks goes through a multi-stage QA process before dispatch. This guide explains the key tests and what you as a buyer should verify.
## Key Fabric Parameters to Test
### 1. GSM (Grams per Square Meter)
GSM is the most important indicator of fabric weight and durability.
| GSM Range | Quality Category | VHF Product |
|---|---|---|
| Below 180 | Substandard (avoid) | Not used |
| 180-200 | Economy grade | Not used |
| 200-220 | Standard grade | Legacy products |
| 220-240 | Good grade | RICHMAN Selex |
| 240-260 | Premium grade | SONY Selex |
| 260+ | Heavy-duty | Special orders |
**How to test at home:** Use a precision scale and measure a 10cm x 10cm fabric swatch. Multiply the weight in grams by 100 to get GSM.
### 2. Colorfastness
Colorfastness measures how well the fabric retains colour after washing.
**Rating scale (ISO 105):**
- Grade 1-2: Unacceptable (colour bleeds significantly)
- Grade 3: Acceptable minimum
- Grade 4: Good
- Grade 4-5: Very Good
- Grade 5: Excellent
VHF targets Grade 4-5 for SONY Selex and Grade 4 for RICHMAN Selex. You can test this yourself by soaking a fabric sample in water for 30 minutes with a white cotton cloth — the white cloth should show minimal or no colour transfer.
### 3. Shrinkage Test
All cotton-polyester blends shrink slightly after washing. Acceptable shrinkage for school uniforms is under 3%.
**Test method:**
1. Mark a 30cm x 30cm square on the fabric before washing
2. Machine wash at 40°C (standard home wash)
3. Tumble dry or line dry
4. Measure the square again
5. Calculate: (Original size - Post-wash size) / Original size × 100 = Shrinkage %
VHF pre-shrinks all fabrics during manufacturing, achieving <2% shrinkage for SONY Selex and 2-3% for RICHMAN Selex.
### 4. Tensile Strength (Seam Strength)
Tensile strength tests how much force is needed to break a fabric seam. For school uniforms worn by active children:
- **Minimum acceptable:** 25 kg
- **Good:** 35-40 kg
- **VHF RICHMAN Selex:** 35-40 kg
- **VHF SONY Selex:** 45-50 kg
### 5. Pilling Resistance
Pilling (small fibre balls forming on fabric surface) is common in lower-quality fabrics. Use the ICI Pilling Box Test (Grade 1-5):
- Grade 1-2: Heavy pilling (reject)
- Grade 3: Moderate pilling (acceptable for economy products)
- Grade 4: Light pilling (good)
- Grade 5: No pilling (excellent)
### 6. Dimensional Stability
This checks whether the garment retains its shape and size after multiple washes. VHF tests every size from 22 to 40 across all school slacks to ensure consistent fit.
## VHF's 3-Stage Quality Assurance Process
### Stage 1: Incoming Fabric Inspection
Before fabric enters the production floor:
- GSM verified against purchase order specifications
- Colorfastness checked with spot test
- Defect scan: holes, weave irregularities, shade variation
- Any non-conforming fabric is returned to the supplier
### Stage 2: In-Process Inspection
During production:
- Stitching quality: stitch density, thread tension, overlock consistency
- Measurement checks every 50 pieces (random sampling)
- Defect tagging and rework for minor issues
- Production batch records maintained
### Stage 3: Final Inspection Before Dispatch
- 100% visual inspection of finished garments
- 10% random sample for measurement verification
- Packaging check: correct labelling, size sorting
- Defect rate target: <1% for RICHMAN Selex, <0.5% for SONY Selex
## Red Flags: What to Watch for When Buying Hosiery Wholesale
1. **No factory tour offered** — A legitimate manufacturer welcomes visits. VHF's factory at B-28/1, Wazirpur is always open to dealer visits.
2. **GSM not specified** — Any supplier unwilling to state the GSM of their fabric is likely using substandard material.
3. **Sample quality far exceeds bulk quality** — Test the bulk batch, not just the samples.
4. **No GST invoice** — GST compliance is mandatory. VHF GST: 07AAOPG8901A1ZZ.
5. **Extremely low pricing** — Fabric and labour costs have a floor. Prices 30%+ below market usually indicate compromised quality.
## How to Request QA Documentation from VHF
When placing a bulk order with VHF, you can request:
- Fabric test report (GSM, colorfastness)
- In-line production photos
- Pre-dispatch inspection report
- GST-compliant invoice
